Ukraine Pilots to Begin Rafale Fighter Training in France Soon

1 min read

President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on October 5 that Ukrainian pilots will soon begin training on French Rafale fighter jets in France, following a phone conversation with French President Emmanuel Macron. The announcement represents a significant development for Ukraine's air force capabilities.

Zelensky stated: new defense deliveries are being prepared, and a new package is expected to arrive in Ukraine soon. Ukrainian pilots will soon start training on French Rafale aircraft in France, marking a powerful step for Ukrainian combat aviation.

Defense Cooperation with France

The Rafale is a twin-engine multirole combat aircraft manufactured by Dassault Aviation and operated exclusively by the French Air and Space Force and French Navy. France's decision to train Ukrainian pilots on the Rafale signals a deepening of Franco-Ukrainian defense cooperation.

During the conversation, Macron and Zelensky also discussed Russian terrorist escalation and Ukraine's defense needs. France has been gradually increasing its military support to Ukraine, including artillery systems, armored vehicles, and air defense equipment.

Significance for Ukrainian Air Power

The Rafale training follows Ukraine's earlier experience with F-16 jets, where several Western countries agreed to supply and train Ukrainian pilots on American-made fighters. Adding Rafale training expands the pool of advanced aircraft that Ukrainian aviators will be qualified to fly.

Ukraine has long sought advanced Western combat aircraft to counter Russian air superiority. The gradual transfer of these capabilities represents a key pillar of Western military assistance to Kyiv.
