Ukraine Plans Bomb Shelters at All Border Checkpoints by Year End

1 min read

Ukraine's government announced plans on October 1, 2026, to provide protective bomb shelters at every border crossing point across the country before the end of the year. The initiative is aimed at protecting the personnel and travelers who pass through these locations, which have become potential targets during Russia's ongoing aerial campaign.

EU Partnership

According to officials, European Union assistance will help fund the construction or installation of shelters at approximately one-third of the country's border crossing points. The remaining locations will be covered through Ukrainian state funds and other international partners.

Security at the Border

Border crossings have come under increased pressure during the war, both from potential military strikes and from elevated passenger and cargo traffic. Providing shelters ensures that border personnel and travelers have safety infrastructure in place during air raids.

The plan is part of broader Ukrainian efforts to harden civilian and administrative infrastructure against Russian aerial attacks ahead of the winter season.
