Ukraine Protects Trains from Russian Drone Attacks: 1,600 Rail Strikes in 2026

Russian forces have dramatically escalated attacks on Ukraine's railway system in 2026, targeting one of the country's most critical wartime assets. According to Ukrzaliznytsia (Ukrainian Railways) representative Oleh Holovaschenko, over 1,600 attacks on trains and rail infrastructure were recorded in the first eight months of 2026 alone.

Recent incidents

On September 16, the Kyiv-Mykolaiv train was struck by a Russian drone. The day before, September 15, a locomotive was attacked in the Volhynia region near the Polish border. On September 13, a Russian drone hit the locomotive of a passenger train at the Yahodyn border crossing, just 2 kilometers from Poland. Ukrainian rail monitoring detected the incoming drone, and the affected train was evacuated 15 minutes before impact — no passengers were injured.

Why Russia targets railways

Ukraine's railway network serves as a critical lifeline: it moves people away from danger zones, delivers military supplies to the front, and keeps essential trade routes open. Disrupting it would significantly impair Ukraine's war effort and humanitarian logistics.

Protective measures

Ukraine is implementing a range of countermeasures, including improved drone detection systems, hardened infrastructure, and protocols for emergency train evacuation. The rail system has proven remarkably resilient despite intense Russian pressure.
