Ukraine SBU detains Russian agent who spied on military logistics

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) announced the detention of a Russian intelligence agent who had been conducting covert operations to gather information on Ukrainian military supply chains, logistics routes, and the movement of troops near the front line. The agent had allegedly been operating under cover for several months before being identified and apprehended.

Espionage operation details

According to the SBU, the detained individual had been tasked by Russian military intelligence (GRU) to track the movement of military equipment and personnel in one of Ukraine's eastern regions. The agent used a combination of personal observation, mobile device surveillance, and contacts within local communities to compile detailed reports sent to handlers in Russia.

The SBU stated that the agent's activities put Ukrainian forces at direct risk, as the intelligence gathered could be used to plan targeted strikes against supply convoys and storage facilities.

Ongoing counterintelligence effort

Ukrainian authorities have detained hundreds of alleged Russian agents and collaborators since the full-scale invasion began in February 2022. The SBU has intensified its counterintelligence operations as Russia continues to rely heavily on human intelligence networks to compensate for limitations in satellite and drone reconnaissance over certain areas.
