Ukraine Strikes Yandex Data Centers, Russian Bot Activity Drops

1 min read

Ukraine struck three Yandex data centers between October 8 and 11, 2026, targeting facilities in Sasovo (Ryazan region), Vladimir, and Kaluga. The strikes disrupted a key component of Russia's digital infrastructure, with noticeable effects on automated information operations.

Social media users quickly observed a significant decrease in Russian bot activity following the attacks. A Czech Member of the European Parliament also noted the visible reduction in coordinated inauthentic behavior typically attributed to Russian state-linked information operations.

Yandex, Russia's dominant internet company, operates data centers that power not only its search engine and services but also infrastructure used by state and state-adjacent actors conducting influence operations online. The disruption of these facilities — even temporarily — reduced the volume of automated content pushing Russian narratives on international platforms.

However, analysts cautioned that Russian propaganda has not been stopped entirely. The Kremlin's information machine operates through multiple redundant channels, including state TV, Telegram channels, and distributed bot networks on various platforms. The strikes may have degraded capacity but did not eliminate the threat.

The attacks represent a new front in the information war accompanying Russia's military campaign. Ukraine has demonstrated a willingness to strike digital infrastructure as part of its broader strategy to degrade Russian military and political effectiveness.

Russia had previously conducted its own attacks on Ukrainian digital infrastructure in September 2026, targeting internet service providers including Utels, Datagroup, and Faust. The Yandex strikes can be seen as a direct counter-move in this escalating cyber-physical conflict.
