Ukraine's Carthage scandal: seven prosecutors face dismissal as attorney general refuses to resign

Ukrainian Attorney General Ruslan Kravchenko confirmed on September 7, 2026 that seven prosecutors from different departments of the Office of the Prosecutor General will be referred to the Qualification and Disciplinary Commission of Prosecutors (KDKP) for potential dismissal following the scandal known as Carthage. The prosecutors are accused of misconduct in connection with the case, which involves allegations of corruption and the misuse of state resources.

Kravchenko explains the NABU incident

Kravchenko also addressed an earlier incident in which investigators from the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) were initially blocked from entering the building of the Office of the Prosecutor General during a search. He said the security guards had initially not let the detectives in but that the situation was subsequently resolved and investigators were granted access. He confirmed that items were seized from his office during the search.

No resignation planned

Despite calls from some political figures and civil society for his resignation amid the ongoing scandal, Kravchenko said he does not plan to submit a voluntary resignation. He indicated that he intends to continue in his role and oversee the disciplinary proceedings against the prosecutors involved. The Carthage scandal has become a significant political controversy in Ukraine, implicating the senior prosecutorial establishment and raising questions about accountability within the justice system.
