Ukraine's Rada Passes Education Bill Aimed at Ending Hungary's EU Veto
The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has passed a new education law designed to address longstanding Hungarian concerns about the rights of the Hungarian-speaking minority in the Zakarpattia region. Budapest had been blocking several EU decisions concerning Ukraine, citing the 2017 education law that restricted minority-language instruction. The new legislation expands rights for national minority communities to receive education in their native languages. Hungarian officials have been closely watching the legislative process, and Kyiv hopes the changes will prompt Budapest to lift its veto on Ukraine's European integration steps. The law still needs to be signed by the President before it takes effect.
