Ukrainian Drones Hit Yamal Gas Infrastructure for the First Time — Initial Reports

Initial reports emerging Tuesday morning indicate that Ukrainian long-range drones have struck gas processing infrastructure in Russia's Yamal Peninsula region — the first time Ukraine has successfully hit targets this far into Russian territory.

Sources cited by Ukrainian media say the drones, believed to be SSO (Special Operations Forces) operated, flew over 2,000 kilometers to reach their targets in the Yamburg and Urengoy gas processing complexes, which are among Russia's largest natural gas production facilities.

The reported strikes, if confirmed, would represent a dramatic extension of Ukraine's ability to reach deep into Russian energy infrastructure. Previous Ukrainian drone strikes had reached targets in the Moscow region and other areas, but Yamal is located in the far north of Russia, well beyond most previous strike ranges.

Russian authorities had not immediately confirmed or denied the reports. Emergency services in the region were reportedly placed on alert.

Ukraine's SSO has been credited with orchestrating several long-range deep-strike operations targeting Russian energy and military infrastructure, as part of a strategy to impose costs on Russia for its invasion.
