Ukrainian law enforcement agencies have apprehended a high-ranking military official in a bribery sting. The State Bureau of Investigation (SBI), in coordination with the Office of the Prosecutor General, arrested a National Guard colonel who previously served as the head of the Central Base of Production and Technological Equipment. The official was caught attempting to purchase a fraudulent disability classification to secure a discharge from military service.

The Bribery Scheme

According to the investigation, the colonel offered a $6,000 bribe to a member of the medical expert team responsible for assessing daily functioning. In exchange, he sought an official Group II disability status, despite having no legitimate medical conditions that would warrant such a classification.

Authorities reported that the medical professional explicitly rejected the offer and confirmed there were no medical grounds for the disability claim. However, the suspect persisted in his efforts. The sting operation culminated on March 24, when the colonel was detained red-handed while handing over the first installment of $3,000.

Legal Proceedings and Ongoing Probe

The detained official has been formally served with a notice of suspicion for offering an illicit benefit to a public official, falling under Part 3 of Article 369 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. If convicted, he faces a potential sentence of up to eight years in prison.

During subsequent searches, investigators seized cash and other evidentiary materials. Law enforcement is currently investigating whether other individuals were involved in this corruption scheme. Furthermore, the Office of the Prosecutor General confirmed that the court rejected a motion from the defense team requesting the suspect be released on personal recognizance.
