UN Warns of New Refugee Wave as Yemen War Casualties Mount

1 min read

UN humanitarian agencies warned Monday that renewed fighting in Yemen risks triggering a new mass displacement crisis, with frontline areas already seeing increased civilian movement as families flee escalating hostilities.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said that Yemen already hosts more than 4.5 million internally displaced persons — one of the world's largest IDP populations — and warned that a fresh military offensive could push those numbers significantly higher.

Food security conditions have remained dire, with OCHA reporting that approximately 17 million people are facing acute food insecurity. Aid agencies have struggled to maintain supply chains amid ongoing access restrictions and security deterioration.

Diplomatic efforts to revive a permanent ceasefire, which had shown some progress in previous months, have stalled. UN Special Envoy for Yemen expressed concern that without renewed political engagement, the humanitarian situation will only worsen as the conflict's 11th year approaches.
