On the night of March 31, multiple unidentified drones breached Estonian airspace, prompting the country's armed forces to issue air raid alerts across several regions. Following the incursions, authorities recovered the wreckage of one unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) in the Kastre parish of Tartumaa county, a region bordering Russia.
Colonel Uku Arold, Head of Strategic Communications for the Estonian Defense Forces, suggested the incident was a byproduct of the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia. According to Arold, Ukraine had launched drone strikes against Russian military and war-supporting infrastructure near the Baltic Sea that night.
"Russia attempts to repel these attacks, in particular by knocking drones off course using various means. Most likely, we are dealing with exactly such drones that have strayed off course," Arold stated.
Estonian military officials confirmed that radars and fighter jets tracked several drones entering the nation's airspace. However, no interception measures were taken, and none of the UAVs were shot down over Estonian territory.
This incident is part of a growing trend of stray UAVs entering the airspace of neighboring European nations amid intensified strikes on Russian facilities.
