The Latvian Armed Forces reported the detection of an unidentified foreign drone flying close to the nation's eastern border with Russia on the evening of March 30.
According to an official statement released on the social media platform X, the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) was spotted operating near the Ludza and Balvi municipalities. Military officials confirmed that while the drone approached the frontier, it did not breach Latvian airspace at any point.
In response to the potential security risk, Latvian authorities promptly activated their emergency public warning system. Residents in the affected regions received immediate SMS notifications to keep them informed of the situation.
Once the military confirmed that the foreign drone had altered its course and moved away from the border area, a subsequent text message was dispatched to locals, officially declaring that the threat had passed.
