US and Denmark Announce Greenland Deal After Months of Dispute

The United States announced an agreement with Denmark resolving months of tension over Greenland, with President Donald Trump declaring details of the deal on Saturday. Trump had previously and repeatedly demanded that the US annex the Danish autonomous territory, at times declining to rule out the use of force.

Denmark's Cautious Response

The Danish government confirmed only that an agreement had been reached, stating it was 'good for NATO and for Europe' and would strengthen security in the North Atlantic and the Arctic. Strategic Importance

Greenland, home to some 60,000 people and covered four-fifths by ice, holds geostrategic significance in the North Atlantic between North America and Europe. Trump has repeatedly cited the presence of Russian and Chinese military activities near Greenland to justify US security interest in the island. An existing agreement already allows the US to expand troop deployments and military facilities on the island, provided Denmark and Greenland are notified.
