US deploys additional Patriot batteries to Saudi Arabia and Qatar
The United States has deployed two additional Patriot missile batteries to Saudi Arabia and Qatar in recent weeks to protect key oil and gas facilities, Axios reported, citing US officials with knowledge of the matter.
Protecting Gulf energy infrastructure
The deployment was intended to reassure both Gulf allies that the US would defend their critical energy assets in the event that President Donald Trump decides to resume large-scale military operations against Iran. In early August, when Trump was considering a large-scale strike option, US forces moved to preemptively bolster the air defenses of its Gulf partners.
Regional context
The move comes against the backdrop of heightened tensions in the Middle East over Iran's nuclear program and its support for regional proxies. The US has periodically reinforced Gulf air defenses since the Houthi attacks on Saudi oil infrastructure in 2019. The two additional Patriot batteries represent a significant additional layer of protection for some of the world's most important energy assets.
