US Deploys Third Aircraft Carrier to the Middle East Amid Escalating Tensions

The United States is significantly bolstering its military footprint in the Middle East by dispatching a third aircraft carrier to the region, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal citing US officials.

Naval Fleet Expansion

On March 31, the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush, along with its accompanying warships, departed from Naval Station Norfolk in Virginia. The transit to the Middle East is projected to take several weeks. Once it arrives, the vessel will integrate with two existing US carrier strike groups in the area.

The current status of US aircraft carriers designated for the region includes:

  • USS Abraham Lincoln: Currently executing active operational duties in the Arabian Sea.
  • USS Gerald R. Ford: Temporarily docked at a port in Croatia for scheduled repairs.

Ground Troop Surge and Regional Defense

Beyond naval deployments, Washington is reinforcing its presence across multiple domains. Over the past weekend, amphibious assault ships and the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit entered the strategic waters surrounding Iran. Furthermore, US President Donald Trump has directed elements of the 82nd Airborne Division to the Middle East and is actively weighing the deployment of an additional 10,000 ground troops.

The military buildup coincides with statements from US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, who recently declared that the upcoming days in the war against Iran will be decisive. Hegseth noted that Tehran's military capabilities to influence the ongoing situation are steadily diminishing.

Meanwhile, regional security remains highly volatile. Media reports indicate that continuous and intense Iranian drone and missile bombardments have nearly exhausted the interceptor missile stockpiles of the air defense systems belonging to Gulf Arab states.
