A hiker from the United States died on Mount Etna in Sicily after being struck by lightning during a visit to the iconic European volcano. Emergency services were called to the scene and confirmed the fatality. The incident occurred on one of the most popular hiking destinations in southern Europe, drawing thousands of tourists each year.

Mount Etna, which rises more than 3,300 metres above sea level on the eastern coast of Sicily, is one of the world's most active volcanoes and an attraction for hikers and scientists alike. Despite its dramatic landscape and volcanic activity, it is generally considered safe for guided tours and trekking when weather conditions are favourable.

Italian authorities urged visitors to exercise caution when planning activities on the mountain, particularly during periods of changeable or stormy weather, when lightning strikes in elevated terrain pose a significant risk.
