The United States House of Representatives passed a wide-ranging Russia sanctions bill on September 16 by a vote of 262 to 159. The legislation, championed by the late Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, now heads to President Donald Trump for signature.

Key provisions

Under the bill, Trump would have authority to impose tariffs of up to 100% on countries that purchase Russian energy or help Russia circumvent existing sanctions. The law also provides for sanctions against Russian officials, banks, and vessels of Russia's shadow fleet used to evade Western restrictions. It additionally extends current sanctions against Iran.

If signed into law, the bill would represent one of the most comprehensive economic pressure packages against Russia since the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
