Vienna Prosecutors Cite 'Eyewitness Testimony' in Arrest of Ukrainska Pravda Journalists

1 min read

The Vienna Prosecutor's Office released a statement regarding the detention of Ukrainska Pravda journalists Mykhailo Tkach and Yaroslav Bondarenko, who were arrested on suspicion of espionage. The prosecution cited eyewitness testimony as the basis for the arrest of a third individual connected to the case.

Vienna Prosecution's Statement

The prosecutor's office stated it is investigating two Ukrainian citizens already in custody on espionage suspicions. It said \“suspicion was reinforced against another individual\” based on eyewitness testimony. The prosecution added that Tkach's detention was ordered based on grounds of flight risk and risk of evidence tampering.

Ukrainska Pravda's Response

Editor-in-chief Sevhil Musaieva stated that Ukrainska Pravda considers the law enforcement overreach and is demanding concrete explanations. The prosecution declined to answer key questions, including how the reliability of third-party information was verified. Musaieva said the publication is seeking legal assistance and demanding Tkach's release.

Background

The arrest of a journalist from one of Ukraine's leading independent outlets has drawn significant criticism from press freedom organizations and Ukrainian officials.
