Five people were injured Friday in a Russian drone attack on Ukraine's Volyn region in the northwest of the country, with one of the drones striking a passenger train travelling near the regional capital Lutsk, regional authorities confirmed.

The Volyn Regional Military Administration said the attack occurred in the morning hours, with multiple drones targeting the region. The strike on the train caused damage to several carriages and the locomotive, but fortunately the train had slowed as a precaution when the air raid siren was activated.

Of the five injured, two are reported to be in serious condition and were transported to regional medical facilities for treatment. The remaining three sustained moderate injuries and were treated at the scene by emergency services. No fatalities were reported.

Rail service on the affected line was temporarily suspended while emergency services and railway engineers assessed the damage and cleared the track. Ukrainian Railways (Ukrzaliznytsia) announced that alternative routes and bus connections were arranged for stranded passengers.

Volyn is one of the westernmost regions of Ukraine and borders Poland. While far from the eastern front lines, the region has experienced an uptick in drone attacks over the summer as Russia has sought to strike infrastructure and transportation links throughout the country.

Ukrainian air defense forces said they shot down several drones during the attack but were unable to intercept all of them before they reached populated and infrastructure targets. Investigations are underway to determine the exact type of drones used and their points of origin.
