Vucic Concedes Defeat in Serbia's Snap Election to Student Movement

1 min read

Former Serbian president Aleksandar Vucic said on Sunday, October 25, that his camp lost Serbia's snap parliamentary election to the student movement, Reuters reported.

"We still have no final results, but based on the sample... it is obvious that we lost these elections. The Student List won, they will have between 135 and 140 seats, and we will have 105, no one else made it into parliament," Vucic said.

How the vote came about

Snap elections were called on September 9 by Vucic, who was still president at the time. At the end of September he resigned from the post.

The vote follows almost two years of student protests against corruption and authoritarianism under Vucic. The protests were sparked by the 2024 collapse of a railway station canopy in Novi Sad, which killed 16 people; students have since won wide public support.

The previous parliamentary elections in Serbia took place on December 17, 2023. More in our World section.
