Why Attachment Theory Is Everywhere Right Now

If you have spent any time online recently, or talked to a therapist, or listened to a podcast about relationships, you have almost certainly encountered attachment theory. The decades-old psychological framework — originally developed to understand how infants bond with caregivers — has undergone a remarkable transformation into a mainstream cultural phenomenon.

What Is Attachment Theory?

Developed by British psychiatrist John Bowlby in the 1950s and 1960s and later expanded by psychologist Mary Ainsworth, attachment theory proposes that the bonds formed between children and their primary caregivers shape how people relate to others throughout their lives.

Attachment styles are commonly categorised as: secure (comfortable with intimacy and independence), anxious (craving closeness and fearing abandonment), avoidant (preferring emotional distance), or disorganised (unpredictable, often linked to trauma).

Why Is It Everywhere Now?

Several factors explain the current explosion in popularity. Social media, particularly TikTok and Instagram, has made psychological concepts accessible to mass audiences. Therapists and relationship coaches widely use the framework, and a growing wellness industry has adopted it as a central vocabulary for self-improvement.

People are desperate to understand why they behave the way they do in relationships. Attachment theory gives them a relatively simple, compelling framework to do that, said one clinical psychologist.

How to Use It

Identifying your attachment style can be a useful starting point for understanding patterns in your relationships. However, experts caution that attachment styles are not fixed destinies — people can and do develop more secure patterns through therapy, self-awareness, and healthy relationships. The goal is not to be labelled, but to understand and grow.
