Why Starlink Has Become Indispensable for Ukraine's Defense
Since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Starlink has become one of the most critical pieces of technology in Ukraine's military arsenal. With around 50,000 Starlink terminals deployed across the country, the satellite internet system provides the connectivity that Ukrainian forces depend on when traditional communications infrastructure is destroyed.
The importance of Starlink became clear immediately at the start of the war, when Russia launched a cyberattack on the KA-SAT satellite system that Ukraine had been using. With that system disabled, Ukraine quickly turned to Starlink as an alternative. Since then, Starlink has enabled Ukrainian soldiers to communicate, coordinate drone strikes, and transmit real-time battlefield data even in areas where mobile networks and power grids have been destroyed.
However, Ukraine's heavy reliance on Starlink also represents a strategic vulnerability. Elon Musk's company SpaceX controls access to the system and has previously restricted usage in certain combat zones. This dependence on a private commercial entity for critical military infrastructure has raised serious questions about reliability and sovereignty.
European governments and military analysts are now urging the development of European alternatives to reduce dependency on a single provider. The Ukraine war has accelerated investment in military satellite communications across NATO member states.
