Wildfires across Europe are stark climate warning, says Prince William

Prince William has described the devastating wildfires burning across France, Spain and the UK as a "stark reminder of the challenges posed by an increasingly extreme climate." His statement on X came as more than 300,000 people have been evacuated across France and Spain, with fires described as the worst France has seen in two decades and the worst ever experienced in the Madrid region of Spain.

Prince William's message

Writing on social media, the Prince of Wales expressed his thoughts for those affected and praised emergency responders: "We are deeply grateful to the firefighters, emergency services and volunteers working tirelessly in extraordinarily difficult conditions. These events are a stark reminder of the challenges posed by an increasingly extreme climate and the importance of protecting both people and nature."

Scale of the crisis

A wildfire has burned to within nine miles of the French city of Bordeaux, prompting the city's mayor to warn residents. In Scotland, a major incident was declared at the weekend following a large wildfire in the Cairngorms national park, while smaller fires have burned in multiple locations across the UK.

The UK's Met Office warned that conditions by Wednesday could make fires exceptionally severe in parts of London, the south east and east of England amid hot, dry weather. Two people had to be rescued after attempting to film a wildfire in Wales using a drone.

Europe's climate reality

According to the Copernicus climate service, Europe is the world's fastest-warming continent, heating up at twice the global average rate. Scientists link this trend directly to increased summer heatwaves, water stress and more intense wildfires. France has activated the EU's civil protection mechanism to request assistance from partner countries as its firefighting resources are stretched beyond capacity.
