World Cup Drives Smartphone Football Game Boom

📅 Aug 12, 2026⏱ 2 min read💬 0 comments

The 2026 FIFA World Cup may be over, but millions of football fans are not ready to move on. This summer saw a remarkable surge in smartphone-based football games, many of them created by hobbyist programmers with little or no prior coding experience — powered in large part by artificial intelligence development tools.

From Basketball to Football: The 38-0-0 Phenomenon

The trend draws inspiration from a viral basketball game called 82-0, in which players assemble a starting lineup of NBA stars from different eras, with teams chosen by a random spinner. Deniz Sancar, who works in the advertising industry, adapted the concept for football, creating a game called 38-0-0. He told industry portal mobilegamer.biz that he had no prior programming experience and built the entire game in a single night using Claude Code, an AI coding assistant. By June 2026, the game had climbed to the top of the UK App Store games chart.

Destiny Eleven Goes Viral After the World Cup

Another standout success is Destiny Eleven, created by Maxence Pigne, a Paris Saint-Germain fan and project manager who came across a career-simulation football game on TikTok and decided to build his own version after the 2026 World Cup. Pigne also used the Claude AI assistant in development. He added more variety and additional decision points to the career path. Speaking to French weekly Le Point, Pigne said releasing the free game earlier than planned paid off: by the end of July, more than one million people had played it and 14 million careers had been created. Leverkusen striker Martin Terrier is reportedly among the fans.

AI Democratises Game Development

Both cases illustrate a broader trend: AI coding assistants are lowering the barrier to entry for app development dramatically. Hobbyists who could previously only imagine building a game can now bring ideas to life in hours. The mobile gaming industry generates billions of dollars annually, and the post-World-Cup window proved fertile ground for new football gaming concepts to flourish.
