Zelensky: Ukraine Developing Its Own Starlink-Style Satellite Internet System

1 min read

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky disclosed that Ukraine is working on developing its own satellite internet system modeled on SpaceX's Starlink. The president confirmed that preliminary development work is already underway, describing the initiative as strategically important for Ukraine's long-term technological independence.

Ukraine's Satellite Ambitions

Zelensky announced the project without providing detailed technical specifications, but indicated that the country has already made meaningful progress in the early stages of development. The system is intended to serve both military communications and civilian connectivity needs.

Ukraine has relied heavily on Starlink terminals, provided partly through agreements with SpaceX and through allied support, for military communications since the early stages of the Russian invasion. The availability and political dimensions of that reliance have created vulnerability, motivating the push for a homegrown alternative.

Reducing Foreign Dependence

Developing a sovereign satellite connectivity system would reduce Ukraine's exposure to external decision-making on access and pricing. Ukraine's tech sector, though disrupted by the war, retains significant engineering expertise that could be directed toward such a project.

The announcement reflects Ukraine's broader policy of building domestic defense and technology capabilities as a long-term strategic priority, even as the immediate needs of the ongoing war remain dominant.
