Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Finnish President Alexander Stubb held a telephone conversation to address regional security and a recent incident involving Ukrainian drones breaching Finnish airspace.

The diplomatic exchange, detailed by Zelenskyy on the social media platform X, comes after the Finnish Air Force identified an aerial object that violated its borders on Sunday afternoon as a Ukrainian An-196 "Liutyi" drone.

Airspace Violation and Diplomatic Apology

Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo indicated that the unmanned aerial vehicles, which crashed on Finnish territory, were likely of Ukrainian origin. The incident occurred as Ukrainian forces were conducting strikes against Russian military targets in the neighboring Leningrad region, which shares a border with Finland. In response to the breach, the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has formally apologized to Helsinki.

Addressing the event, Zelenskyy noted a shared understanding between the two nations. "Of course, we mentioned the drone incident that recently occurred on Finnish territory. Alex and I see this situation the same way. We are providing all necessary information," the Ukrainian leader stated.

Broader Security Coordination

Beyond the drone crash, the heads of state focused heavily on international security cooperation and diplomatic strategies concerning the United States. Zelenskyy emphasized the critical need for unified European action amidst global instability.

"Security is paramount, and now, when the world is so destabilized, not a single day can be lost: joint actions and joint results are needed," Zelenskyy remarked, adding that new communication formats with other European leaders are currently in development.

The Ukrainian President also briefed his Finnish counterpart on his recent diplomatic engagements in the Middle East and the Gulf region, highlighting newly forged strategic agreements that he believes will significantly contribute to global stabilization.

Finland's Domestic Response

Following the airspace breach, Finnish authorities are taking swift domestic action. The Finnish Parliament's Defense Committee is scheduled to convene for an extraordinary session on Tuesday, March 31. Lawmakers will discuss pressing national defense matters, with a primary focus on the recent drone incursions.
