Zelenskyy Fires Army Chief Syrskyi After Mass Protests

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has dismissed Gen. Oleksandr Syrskyi as commander-in-chief of Ukraine's armed forces, following days of mass protests across Kyiv and other cities nationwide calling for his removal. Zelenskyy announced the appointment of Mykhailo Drapatyi as the new army chief in a statement shared on social media Tuesday.

Why Syrskyi Was Fired

The dismissal came after sustained public pressure from Ukrainian citizens who took to the streets to demand a change in military leadership. General Mykhailo Drapatyi, the newly appointed commander-in-chief, takes over at a critical juncture for Ukrainian forces. Zelenskyy noted that "a significant path has been traveled, the defense of Ukraine continues, and every warrior deserves dignified treatment."

The leadership change reflects ongoing tensions within Ukraine's military and political establishment over strategy and morale as the conflict grinds on.
