Purja killed in avalanche, DR Congo's worst Ebola outbreak

The night brought two deaths on a very different scale. In Pakistan, an avalanche killed Nirmal Purja, the mountaineer who in 2019 climbed all fourteen 8,000-metre peaks in 189 days; his company confirmed the news. Meanwhile the WHO said the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has become the deadliest the country has ever recorded: 3,605 cases and 1,587 deaths since May, driven by the Bundibugyo strain, for which no approved vaccine exists. Europe spent the night arguing about its borders. Spain says almost all of the more than 50,000 migrants who forced their way into the Ceuta enclave have now returned to Morocco, but at least 67 people died trying to make the crossing by sea, and Italy responded by suspending its Schengen arrangement with Spain while the EU reopened the debate on border policy. The weather did not help: Italy's health ministry placed 25 of its 27 major cities under a red heat alert as a North African anticyclone strengthens over the Mediterranean and temperatures climb into the mid-30s. Closer to the war in Ukraine, Russia and North Korea are finishing their first road bridge across the Tumen River near Khasan. Kyiv fears the crossing will let Moscow move North Korean troops to the front quietly, without the shipping and rail traffic that can be tracked. August 2 is also the day Europe remembers the Roma and Sinti murdered in the Nazi camps — around half a million people — with ceremonies across Central and Southeastern Europe.
