Thailand School Shooting Leads a Grim Morning

A 14-year-old student opened fire at Debsirin School in Nonthaburi, Thailand, killing five teachers and wounding more than 30 before killing himself, one of the deadliest school attacks in years. In Britain, the officer who led the murder investigation into PC Andrew Harper said he was appalled that two of the killers could win early release next year under government plans to ease prison overcrowding. NHS Tayside also opened an inquiry into an alleged data breach involving the records of nine-year-old Minnie Merriman, who died at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee after being found gravely injured at an industrial estate in Arbroath. In Germany, a drone loaded with explosives found at Leipzig airport was linked to networks tied to Russia, prompting the interior minister to warn of a new level of danger. Football politics flared too: Norway demanded FIFA president Gianni Infantino resign over his aborted World Cup privatisation plan, while Mexico and Argentina broke ranks to back him. England forward Ivan Toney, who plays for Saudi club Al-Ahli and started England's World Cup bronze final, was charged with assault after a December incident at a Soho nightclub. Amid the grim news, a lighter find: Belgian diver Stefan Panis recovered a 162-year-old Guinness bottle, dated to 1864, from a shipwreck off Dover, with more thought to remain in the wreck.
