Deadly Drone Strike on Russia, Typhoon Slams China

The deadliest single strike on Russian soil since the war began hit before dawn, as Ukrainian drones struck Nizhnekamsk in Tatarstan, killing at least 13 people, including a child, and wounding 75. The Pentagon answered by announcing plans to speed up weapons production for Ukraine and NATO allies, replenishing stockpiles strained by two years of fighting. Meanwhile in China, Typhoon Dolphin forced the evacuation of over a million people, including in Shanghai, with 150 km/h winds grounding nearly a thousand flights. The storm hit amid a summer of extremes: ocean temperatures hit a record 20.96C in July, and Western Europe is on track for its hottest summer ever, with France, Spain, Germany and the UK all breaking highs. Britain logged a record of its own: 230 people crossed the Channel in one small boat, even as total crossings this year are down 43 percent. Separately, watchdogs opened a misconduct probe into a senior Derbyshire detective over his use of artificial intelligence, the second such case in two months. Elsewhere, Thames Water was criticised for handing its new finance chief a £1m signing bonus despite its debt crisis, and FIFA's Gianni Infantino was accused of overselling World Cup promises. In sport, Olympic champion Keely Hodgkinson is chasing the 800m world record, and Liverpool's Andoni Iraola opened his tenure with ambitious pre-season plans.
