Flores Quake Kills 5 as UK Heatwave Breaks

A magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck Indonesia's Flores island early Saturday, killing at least five people and triggering a tsunami warning that was later lifted. Britain's weather swung hard too. Friday became the 39th day this year above 30C, smashing the 1995 record of 30 such days, but the country's fifth heatwave of 2026 ends this weekend as temperatures drop 10 to 15 degrees. Before the cooldown, the government temporarily banned disposable barbecues and sent 200 troops to help fight wildfires across England and Wales amid the drought. In London, a burst pipe flooded parts of Heathrow, cutting road access to Terminals 2 and 3 in peak summer travel; passengers were told to use rail and the Underground instead. In India, PM Narendra Modi used his Independence Day speech at the Red Fort to promise free exam coaching and AI training for 10 million young people, weeks after protests over leaked exam papers forced the education minister to resign. Tragedy hit the Volta a Portugal, where 19-year-old British rider Finlay Tarling died colliding with a goods vehicle in Stage 8; his team withdrew, and the race continues under a cloud of mourning. Marvel also unveiled its X-Men reboot cast at Disney's D23: Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Adam Driver as villain Mr. Sinister, Kit Connor as Cyclops. The film arrives in May 2028.
