Record drone strike on Russia as wildfires spread
Ukraine launched its largest drone attack of the war, sending 822 drones into Russia and killing at least seven people. About 600 targeted Moscow, where one strike hit a Wildberries warehouse 25 kilometres from the city centre — no accident, analysts say: Kyiv has hit some 20 Wildberries hubs in near-daily raids in recent weeks, destroying an estimated $5.7 billion in goods and a third of the retailer's warehouse space in a deliberate campaign against a choke point of Russian life. Extreme weather and fire filled the rest of the day. Hurricane Lala skirted Hawaii's Big Island with up to 35 inches of rain, sweeping away homes, killing one person in a car crash and cutting power to 200,000 households. On Greece's Salamina island, twin wildfires killed two people and forced over 500 to evacuate by sea. In Britain, 200 Gurkha soldiers joined crews battling 14 wildfires in south Wales, while in Stourbridge, families began returning after a blaze destroyed 19 homes — a firefighter called the absence of deaths "a miracle". Elsewhere, Greater Manchester police ended a two-day Salford standoff by arresting a wanted 37-year-old asleep on a rooftop. Scotland hired Belgian coach Sebastien Pocognoli, who led Union Saint-Gilloise to their first league title in 90 years, to replace Steve Clarke. And Cristiano Ronaldo told Vogue his Al-Nassr season is "probably my last year" of football.
