Hungary Bus Tragedy as Wildfires and Storms Multiply

At least 12 Polish pilgrims died and 47 were injured when their bus veered into a ditch on Hungary's M3 motorway; police arrested the driver, suspected of falling asleep at the wheel. Extreme weather dominated the rest of the morning's news. In Belgium, firefighters are battling the country's largest wildfire on record, which has burned 2,700 hectares of the High Fens nature reserve and pushed to within three kilometers of the German border, forcing evacuations and prompting a request for EU emergency aid. Across the Atlantic, Category 1 Hurricane Lala swept past Hawaii's Big Island without making landfall but still knocked out power to more than 40,000 customers, flooded roads and shut down airports. Back in Germany, the same punishing drought is killing urban trees that normally cool city streets, and scientists are urging residents to start watering them to slow the die-off. Germany also reported a sharp shift on migration: in the first half of 2026 authorities revoked refugee protection for 23.2 percent of Syrians reviewed, up from just 3.7 percent last year, a change officials link to the fall of Bashar Assad. Actual deportations, however, remain rare for now.
