Trump's Tariff Truce, UK Inflation Jump, Drought Find

Donald Trump paused 50% tariffs on about $20 billion of Canadian goods for three days, declaring a trade deal with Ottawa nearly done and floating a Keystone XL revival. Britain absorbed its own jolt: inflation hit a four-month high of 2.9% in July after the energy price cap rose 13% and gas prices spiked amid the US-Iran war. Weather turned extreme on both sides of the Atlantic. The Met Office issued yellow thunderstorm warnings for northern England, Scotland and Northern Ireland, warning of flash floods as rain finally breaks nearly two months of drought. In Nevada, that drought exposed something grim: skeletal remains, including a jaw, turned up at Lake Mead as America's largest reservoir hit a record low. At home, PM Andy Burnham pledged £442 million to house every rough sleeper in England by Christmas, while degree apprenticeships now draw 11.3 applicants per place as tuition costs climb. The CMA opened a probe into Trainline, Virgin Atlantic and RED Driving School over fees inflating prices by hundreds of pounds. Elsewhere, Croatian police arrested a second suspect, a Ukrainian diver, over the 2022 Nord Stream blasts; lawyers for Erin Patterson called a hotel mix-up with jurors "catastrophic"; and Nick Kyrgios was suspended after testing positive for cocaine. Kenyan activist Wawira Njiru capped the day, winning an award for feeding 660,000 schoolchildren.
