Kyiv Hit by Drone Barrage; Ukraine Strikes Back
Russia unleashed one of its heaviest drone barrages on Kyiv overnight, hitting the Nuclear Research Institute, the Southern Bridge and a school in the Solomyansky district within hours on October 1. The reactor was undamaged, two drones knocked out the bridge for inspection halting transport, and the school fire broke out only after children had moved into shelters, with no casualties. Kyiv answered in kind. Zelenskyy said forces struck a Russian warship in the Black Sea, a drone site in Oryol region and fuel storage in Samara, as the General Staff reported a record 46,230 Russian losses for September, the year's highest. A Geran-4 drone also crashed in Moldova's Orhei district on September 30, leaving a crater and blast damage, no injuries. Western pressure kept building. Britain unveiled 31 new sanctions on shadow-fleet tankers, Kremlin propaganda networks and torturers, while Estonia banned Russian and Belarusian grain transit over Moscow's blockade of Ukrainian exports. In Zaporizhzhia, two residents were charged with treason for luring soldiers to their deaths via fake female profiles run by the FSB, paying 120,000 hryvnias per kill. At home, 69% of Ukrainians back an international competition for prosecutor general, while another poll named corruption and EU reluctance the top barriers to membership, as Kyiv pushes to shelter every border checkpoint by year's end.
