Pryluky Strike Kills 20 as Russia Piles Border Pressure
A Russian missile hit a residential building in Pryluky, Chernihiv region, killing 20 people, including five children, the deadliest strike of the day; Zelensky named the youngest victims. The violence continued after dark as another strike set fire to a 12-story block in Kyiv, while in Sumy region two 14-year-old boys died after detonating a found explosive, a reminder of how much unexploded ordnance still litters Ukraine. Border areas felt the pressure too: a Russian drone wounded a man and damaged a warehouse near Kyiv, with a separate fire burning in Fastiv district. Against that backdrop, Moldova began installing shelters at its crossings and pulled staff from two exposed checkpoints, and Kyiv said it is discussing relocating border infrastructure with Moldova, Poland and other neighbors. Berlin added a warning: FM Wadephul told the German-Ukrainian Economic Forum that Russian strikes threaten a third of Ukraine's harvest, with famine a real risk absent action. That came as Steinmeier visited Paris amid populist strain on the Franco-German partnership, visible too in Saxony-Anhalt, where parliament votes October 14 on ending Ukraine aid and lifting Russia sanctions. Elsewhere, Latvia jailed a pro-Kremlin activist for six years for funding Russian drone-jamming gear, and in Belgium, student protests in Liege over a tuition hike turned violent, with 107 detained.
