Kyiv Under Fire: Deadly Strikes, Allies Respond

Russia unleashed its heaviest missile and drone barrage on Kyiv overnight into October 14, killing at least five and wounding 36, among them a seven-year-old girl, as a heating plant took a direct hit and ballistic missiles struck energy facilities, cutting power and halting electric transport in several districts while rescuers combed debris citywide. Foreign Minister Andrii Sibiha called the barrage proof Putin had rejected a US-proposed energy truce, urging tighter sanctions and faster air-defense aid. The EU moved that way, releasing 2.86 billion euros from its 90 billion euro Ukraine loan for drones, air defense, missiles and ammunition. Yet adviser "Flash" warned Starlink speed limits above 160 km/h are grounding the interceptor drones Ukraine uses against fast Shaheds. In Rome, Giorgia Meloni called a separate US-Russia diesel deal "very risky," saying it could hand Moscow fresh war revenue. Elsewhere, a Russian drone killed a 50-year-old man in Beryslav, Kherson region, on October 12, among six wounded there that day. An Odesa court convicted nine draft-office staff of kidnapping and beating men during mobilization, jailing seven for five to seven years. MP Oleksii Honcharenko was expelled from the European Solidarity faction over remarks favoring talks with Russia, and the anti-corruption court kept ex-SBU cyber chief Illia Vituk's enrichment case at its own venue.
