Night Barrage Hits Sumy, Sloviansk, Vinnytsia
Russia launched one of its heaviest combined strikes of the week overnight into October 17, firing Iskander-M, Kh-22/32 and Kalibr missiles alongside 332 Shahed drones; air defense downed or suppressed 293 of them. Eight guided bombs hit Sumy, wounding two in residential areas, while FAB-250 bombs struck Sloviansk in Donetsk region, killing one, wounding ten and damaging eight apartment blocks. A separate strike left Vinnytsia in a total blackout, with mayor Serhiy Morhunov saying critical infrastructure ran on backup power. The strikes sharpened the fight over Western support. Zelensky called Washington's refusal to enforce the Graham Act sanctions a "sanctions blackout," citing the previous day's hits on over 15 energy facilities, while Putin's envoy Kirill Dmitriev hailed Trump's pause on the law as historic for US-Russia ties. Trump said he'd welcome Putin at December's G20 in Miami but doubts he'll come; Italy's defense minister Guido Crosetto called US curbs on Ukraine's intelligence access "an absolute, serious mistake." About 200 protesters rallied on Kyiv's Khreshchatyk demanding mayor Klitschko's resignation, while Ukraine's General Staff denied Gerasimov's claim of capturing 92 settlements since September. Thick fog also blanketed Kyiv, cutting visibility to 200-500 metres and triggering a yellow alert.
