Iran has requested advanced Russian-made Geran drones to use in its conflict with Israel and the United States, the Financial Times reported on Sunday, citing Western security officials. The request highlights the deepening defence partnership between Moscow and Tehran.

What are the Geran drones?

The Geran is Russia's own upgraded version of Iran's original Shahed drone design. Russia began producing Geran drones in 2023. The first generation, the Geran-1, carries a warhead of up to 20 kg and reaches a maximum speed of 185 km/h. The far more capable Geran-5, powered by a jet engine and first reportedly used by Russia in January 2026, can travel at up to 600 km/h, carries a 90 kg warhead, and has a range of up to 1,000 km. The newer variants are also equipped with thermal imaging cameras, making them significantly harder to intercept.

A deepening Tehran-Moscow axis

The request signals a potential reversal of the original Shahed supply chain: Iran provided Russia with the drone design and early units that Russia then improved upon, and now Tehran wants those upgrades back. The development comes as Iran continues its confrontation with Israel and faces ongoing tensions with the United States. Western officials have warned that a transfer of advanced Geran variants to Iran would represent a significant escalation, potentially giving Tehran a more lethal long-range strike capability.
