AfD Extends Lead Over CDU/CSU in New German Opinion Poll

Germany's right-wing populist party Alternative for Germany (AfD) has extended its lead in national opinion polls, widening the gap over the traditional conservative CDU/CSU bloc, according to the latest Deutschlandtrend survey.

The poll also reveals a notable shift in public opinion: a growing proportion of Germans now say they would be open to some form of political cooperation with the AfD on a case-by-case basis, a position previously considered a taboo by mainstream parties.

The CDU and CSU have maintained a so-called firewall against formal cooperation with the AfD. However, pressure from within conservative ranks to at least engage on individual policy votes appears to be intensifying as the AfD consolidates its position as the most-supported party in polls.

The development comes ahead of a series of regional elections in Germany later this year, raising the stakes for established parties navigating how to respond to the AfD's continued electoral strength without legitimising the party's political platform.
