Of Germany's roughly 49 million registered cars, about 47 million still run on combustion engines. In the first half of 2026, some 368,000 fully electric vehicles were added — but that still puts battery-powered cars at barely 2.4 million total, or under five percent of the fleet. The Fraunhofer Institute for Environmental, Safety and Energy Technology (UMSICHT) expects fossil fuels to remain dominant in transport for years to come, not just in trucks and agriculture but also in private cars.
That is why Aral — Germany's largest fuel retailer with around 2,400 stations out of some 14,000 nationwide, and owned by British BP — has run a fuel research facility in Bochum for a hundred years. Some 80 researchers in chemistry, engineering and the natural sciences work on a 27,000-square-meter campus. Their task: not to reinvent fuel, which is impossible, but to optimize it continuously.
Dr. Wenzel Strojek, head of fuel technology projects at Aral, says the path from idea to market typically takes about five years. The process begins with a concept, moves through extensive computer simulations and modeling, and advances to lab tests only after the theoretical models produce solid results. The key question at that stage is whether the new fuel is actually manufacturable at scale.
A fuel contains hundreds of distinct components, and their precise blend determines performance, emissions during production and how cleanly the engine burns. Once the formula is right, Aral tests it on a small pilot production line capable of making around five liters per day. The most exciting step comes next: running the new fuel in real engines to see whether it performs as well as the simulations predicted.
Testing also includes temperature extremes — the fuel must work reliably from above 40°C down to deep below freezing. Only after all these hurdles is it cleared for the pump.
In 2024, Aral launched its Aral Ultimate Diesel, which includes at least 15 percent renewable components. The company declines to disclose how much it spends on research but regularly highlights the results. With millions of combustion-engine drivers still on the road and no near-term mass switch to electric expected, Aral's century-old research laboratory is betting that cleaner, more efficient fossil fuel still has a future.
