Bloomberg: Trump Asked Zelensky to Travel to Moscow for Talks With Putin
US President Donald Trump asked Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to travel to Moscow for direct talks with Russian leader Vladimir Putin during their meeting in New York on September 22, Bloomberg reported. Zelensky refused the proposal. Ukraine’s Presidential Office subsequently denied the Bloomberg report, calling it ‘false information.’
Details of the Alleged Conversation
According to Bloomberg’s sources familiar with Zelensky’s position, Trump’s suggestion irritated the Ukrainian president. When asked by Russian journalists about a visit to Moscow, Zelensky reportedly responded: ‘On a rocket,’ then used profanity, sources said.
The White House did not respond to Bloomberg’s request for comment. Earlier on Friday, Zelensky said that technical peace negotiations between the US, Ukraine, and Russia are likely to take place in the United Arab Emirates, though Washington has not yet proposed a specific date.
Broader Diplomatic Context
During the week at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Zelensky and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov held separate meetings with Trump administration representatives. The US pressed both sides to agree on a ceasefire regarding attacks on each other’s energy infrastructure, amid rapidly rising global diesel prices.
Russian President Putin earlier rejected Zelensky’s proposal to hold peace talks on the sidelines of the G20 summit in the United States. The G20 summit is scheduled to take place in Miami in December 2026.
