Bloomberg: Zelensky and von der Leyen Held Tense Negotiations in New York
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen held tense behind-the-scenes talks on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, Bloomberg reported on Wednesday.
The negotiations, described as unusually strained, centered on Kyiv's demands for accelerated EU membership talks and additional military aid packages amid ongoing Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities.
According to Bloomberg sources familiar with the matter, tensions arose over the EU's pace of processing Ukraine's accession chapters and disagreements on the scope of frozen Russian assets to be transferred to Ukraine's defense fund.
Von der Leyen reportedly pressed Zelensky on anti-corruption reforms required as preconditions for continued EU financial support, while Zelensky insisted that security needs must take precedence over procedural reforms during active hostilities.
Both leaders are attending the UN General Assembly high-level week, where Ukraine's war and its EU future are key agenda items. The European Commission has not commented on the Bloomberg report.
