Border Incident on Ukraine-Moldova Line: Guard Patrol Ends Up on Moldovan Shore

1 min read

A Ukrainian border patrol in Vinnytsia region detected a person moving toward the border and attempted to intercept them. The individual entered the Dnister River and tried to swim across toward Moldova. Border guards pursued the person by boat, but the suspect resisted arrest during the detention attempt.

Boat Swept to Moldovan Shore

Due to low water levels in the river and a subsequent engine failure, the patrol boat was carried to the Moldovan bank. On the Moldovan side, a group of individuals approached the guards in a threatening manner and dragged the boat ashore. Moldovan border guards subsequently arrived at the scene.

Investigation Underway

State Border Guard Service of Ukraine spokesperson Andriy Demchenko confirmed the incident, stating that an internal service investigation has been launched into the circumstances. Ukraine and Moldova share approximately 1,200 kilometres of border, with the Dnister River forming a significant portion of the boundary in Vinnytsia and Odesa regions.
