Chile's Bachelet Withdraws From Race to Lead United Nations

1 min read

Michelle Bachelet, twice president of Chile and former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, confirmed she is stepping back from the contest to succeed Antonio Guterres as Secretary-General of the United Nations, whose current term is due to expire in 2027.

Bachelet, widely considered one of the most credentialed candidates in the field, cited what she described as an insufficient level of support among Security Council permanent members to proceed with a viable candidacy. While Latin America has traditionally supported her bid, sources indicate that the geopolitical divisions among the P5 — particularly over her vocal human rights record and positions on Russia and China — made consensus unlikely.

Her withdrawal clears the field for other candidates and intensifies pressure to identify a candidate capable of bridging East-West divisions at a moment when the UN faces arguably its most serious credibility and functionality challenges in decades.

Regional blocs and observers have flagged that the selection process for Secretary-General remains opaque and dominated by great-power interests, with genuine multilateral representation often sacrificed to geopolitical accommodation.
