The Conservative Party has moved swiftly to suspend a prospective parliamentary candidate following the emergence of historical social media posts containing neo-Nazi content and imagery. The posts, which dated back several years, were uncovered by investigative journalists and published on Tuesday.
The party's central office confirmed the suspension and said an internal investigation had been launched. A party spokesperson said the views expressed in the posts were completely at odds with Conservative Party values and had no place in public life.
The candidate issued a statement saying the posts were from a dark period in their life and did not reflect their current views. However, Jewish community groups and other organisations condemned the content and called for the candidate to be permanently removed.
The incident has caused embarrassment for the Conservative leadership, which is already under pressure following poor performance in recent by-elections. Opposition parties called for a review of the party's candidate vetting processes.
