ECB Investigates England Bowler Brydon Carse After Nightclub Incident in Derby

England fast bowler Brydon Carse is under investigation by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) after videos circulated on social media on Sunday appearing to show him being led from a nightclub in Derby in handcuffs by four police officers. Carse, who plays for Durham and is a member of England's squad for the second Test against Pakistan this week, was reportedly seen alongside team-mate Matthew Potts at the venue.

ECB Statement

The ECB confirmed the incident in a brief statement: "We are aware of an incident which is reported to have taken place in Derby last night, and are currently investigating. We will provide a further update when possible." The investigation comes five days after England's newly appointed Test captain Joe Root urged his players to be "really good role models and human beings" at the start of his second reign in charge.

England's Turbulent Summer

The incident adds to an already difficult period for English cricket. Former captain Ben Stokes announced a shock retirement from international cricket, and coach Brendon McCullum was sacked. Off-field issues have dominated, including an incident involving Harry Brook at a nightclub bouncer in Wellington and the team's drinking during a mid-Ashes trip to Noosa — a sequence of events that contributed to a heavy 4-1 defeat by Australia.

Further disruption followed this summer when Stokes broke a team curfew, setting in motion a chaotic six weeks resulting in a 2-1 series defeat by New Zealand, his retirement and McCullum's dismissal. Root opted earlier this month to scrap a midnight curfew that had been imposed in January.

Carse's Background

Carse, who was born in South Africa, made his international debut for England in 2021. He was suspended from cricket for three months in 2024 for historic betting offences — 303 bets on matches between 2017 and 2019 in which he was not personally involved.
