Deutsche Bahn Posts First Profit Since 2019 as Passenger Numbers Rebound

Germany's national railway operator Deutsche Bahn reported its first profitable half-year since 2019, marking a significant turnaround after years of losses caused by the pandemic, energy price shocks and costly infrastructure investment.

Strong Revenue and Passenger Growth

In the first six months of 2026, Deutsche Bahn recorded notably higher revenue compared to the same period last year. Passenger numbers on its long-distance services have risen substantially, as travellers increasingly choose rail over air for medium-distance journeys amid high airfare prices and environmental awareness campaigns.

Remaining Challenges

Despite the positive figures, the railway's management acknowledged that punctuality and capacity remain significant problems. Track maintenance backlogs have accumulated over decades of underinvestment, leading to frequent delays and cancellations. A major infrastructure renewal programme is under way, but full resolution is expected to take many years and tens of billions of euros.

Political Dimension

The profit announcement provides a morale boost for Deutsche Bahn's leadership and the German government, which fully owns the company. Policymakers have pushed for rail expansion as part of Germany's green transport transition. However, critics note that the profit is partly a result of government subsidies and fare increases passed on to passengers.

Outlook

Management expressed cautious optimism for the remainder of 2026, noting that demand remains strong but that energy costs and wage agreements could pressure margins in the coming months.
