England made an emphatic start to the Test series against Pakistan at Headingley, bowling out their opponents for just 171 runs on the first day. The star performers were Ollie Robinson and Josh Tongue, who each claimed five wickets in a remarkable display of swing bowling that left Pakistan struggling throughout their first innings.
Ollie Robinson was in superb form, moving the ball both ways to constantly trouble the Pakistan batting lineup. Josh Tongue was equally impressive, generating pace and late movement to supplement Robinson's more classical swing. Their combined ten-wicket haul gave England complete control of the first day's play.
England closed the first day on 112 for 2 in reply, leaving them just 59 runs behind Pakistan's total. With eight wickets in hand, England are firmly in the driving seat ahead of day two at Headingley.
The series marks Joe Root's return as England captain for a second spell, and he could not have asked for a better opening day from his bowling attack.
