But Shearer is deeply worried about what comes next. Alexander Isak departed last summer, followed this year by Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali. There is ongoing speculation about captain Bruno Guimaraes, who Shearer believes is likely next to leave. "You cannot keep on selling your best players and then hope to be in contention at the top of the table," he wrote.

The timing of Howe's exit — mid-pre-season, with new signings reportedly falling through — has compounded the sense of crisis. Shearer does not underestimate the scale of the task facing whoever is appointed as the next head coach.
